The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay Recognizes Lauren’s Garden Service & Native Plant Nursery as a Businesses for the Bay Gold Member
(Annapolis, MD – March 6, 2018) – The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay recognizes Lauren’s Garden Service & Native Plant Nursery as a Businesses for the Bay Gold Member. Lauren’s Garden Service & Native Plant Nursery joins a growing partnership of large and small businesses in the Chesapeake Bay watershed that are undertaking voluntary actions to improve the health of our watershed, rivers, and streams.
The Businesses for the Bay Membership Association provides a network for its Members to share strategies and successes with other businesses and governmental and non-profit Networking Partners, as well as opportunities to engage employees in environmental efforts, and receive recognition for the valuable role each Member is taking to help improve the environment. As a Gold Member, the Alliance recognizes Lauren’s Garden Service & Native Plant Nursery for its commitment to Chesapeake Bay protection and restoration.
Lauren’s Garden Service & Native Plant Nursery was created to offer an environmentally friendly option for garden lovers who just didn’t have time to maintain their own gardens. Lauren’s Garden Service embraces permaculture practices in all aspects of their gardening and landscaping including plant selection, fertilizing and soil enhancement, planting and weeding techniques, as well as other installation and maintenance practices. Lauren’s Garden Service & Native Plant Nursery’s property is managed in an environmentally-sound way. They maintain a 150 sq foot native pollinator garden, adjacent to the native plant nursery; they often observe bees and butterflies using the cardinal flowers, asters, coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, sunflowers, and other native species. The team also regularly removes non-native, invasive plant species (including bittersweet, Japanese honeysuckle, and wineberry) from their property. Pesticides are never used on their property.
The team maintains a 10 acre “preservation parcel” on the property. They participate in the Howard County, MD Turf to Trees program with this parcel and now maintain the ~250 trees and shrubs that were planted. Approximately 2-3 acres in the parcel consist of stream buffers planted with native shade trees, which will increase the property’s resilience to climate change. In addition, the parcel serves as a wildlife corridor for the native wildlife that live on their property and the adjacent wooded areas.
In their office, the team decreases the use of plastic and they only use “green” office cleaning supplies. Environmental education is a huge part of Lauren’s Garden Service & Native Plant Nursery’s business model. All of their employees are trained on the most recent environmental research and they regularly raise their clients’ awareness about environmental issues.
“At Lauren’s Garden Service we take care of the local waterways, land and air seriously”, noted Lauren Turner, Owner. “Our employees are dedicated to all of the eco-friendly practices we follow from recycling, using organic garden maintenance, reducing the amount of lawn we mow, planting native trees, shrubs and perennials, removing invasive plants and educating the community about the importance of ‘clean’ gardening. We also follow all of these practices when we design and install projects for our clients from stormwater BMPs to conservation landscapes and permeable patios.”
Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay Business Partnerships Manager, Corinne Stephens, stated, “Through the Alliance’s Businesses for the Bay Membership Association, we help businesses to have a positive impact on our local environment, expand their sustainability programs, engage employees, and be recognized for their environmental successes.”
