Recycling Perks – Norfolk

Norfolk, Virginia

Membership Type: Silver

Project Summary

Recycling Perks is a Founding Businesses for the Bay Member. Launched in partnership with TFC Recycling in the spring of 2011, Recycling Perks strives to improve household recycling efforts to reduce waste, and promote local businesses by offering great savings and exclusive deals that rewards recyclers. Simply put: “you recycle, we reward.” Click here for more info about the City of Norfolk’s Recycling Perks program.

Recycling can help save energy and natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce air and water pollution. Recycling Perks educates the community about recycling and how it helps the environment through events, and over social media (posting weekly to Facebook), newspapers, and blogs in their monthly newsletters. Please click here for an example blog post. Check out their recycling quiz that was posted on TV, Pilot online, their newsletters and on Facebook. The team also keeps plastic out of our waterways by handing out reusable bags and encouraging community members to bring them to stores (instead of using disposable bags); in 2017, they gave out 1200 reusable bags at events and recycling presentations in Norfolk!

In 2017, they hosted a Norfolk schools carton recycling contest (several schools participated), an America Recycles Day game on Colley Avenue for America Recycles Day, an Earth Month awareness interview session, and a Norfolk Civil League presentation in Fairmount Park.

In 2016, Recycling Perks presented talks for the Norfolk Civil League and educated local elementary students and a Girl Scout Troop about recycling and other environmental issues. They also created an America Recycles Day Street Interview & Quiz in downtown Norfolk, VA (Click here to learn more).

The City of Norfolk Waste Management, Keep Norfolk Beautiful and Recycling Perks facilitated a children’s creative challenge from August 5th, 2016 to January 8th, 2017, where children were challenged to produce artwork encouraging Norfolk residents to recycle and live greener (Click here to learn more).
