Smithfield Foods is committed to reducing their environmental footprint. For more than a decade, Smithfield Foods has focused on sustainability.
The Smithfield Toano – Smithfield Specialty Foods Businesses for the Bay program is one of three Smithfield Foods facilities included in the Alliance’s Businesses for the Bay program. Sustainability is ingrained in their culture, and that applies to the way they run their plants, the products they produce, and the way they treat their employees and the communities where they operate. The Toano Smithfield Specialty Foods employees are creating an office Green Team, including staff from the Environmental Management System department; they plan to meet at least quarterly to discuss sustainability goals, work on projects, and collect documentation. The team supports leadership training that addresses environmental protection and conservation by creating and providing at least one environmental education event for employees per year. The team also cleans up trash in their community through at least one Project Clean Stream trash clean-up per year.
The Toano Smithfield Specialty Foods facility minimizes litter and keeps trash out of our waterways by providing contained outdoor cigarette butt receptacles for smokers. They maintain the stormwater retention basin on the rented warehouse property so that stormwater from the facility is effectively and efficiently controlled.
